Intro to the Mystic

It’s not quite ready for prime time as a whole (hopefully next week), but here’s a snippet from the introduction to the upcoming mystic class for Adventures Dark and Deep™, just to whet your appetites…

The mystic is an initiate of an inner mystery tradition that seeks direct communion with the multiverse in order to achieve enlightenment. Insight, awareness, and a deep connection with ultimate reality are the hallmarks and ultimate goals of the mystic. Most good-aligned faiths have such mystery traditions within them, even if they are not enthusiastically promoted by the hierarchy or followed by masses of people. The spells available to the mystic are centered on knowledge and defense, but his special connection with the multiverse gives him special insights into the workings of the planes as well. They are not able to deliberately craft magical items, but often times objects particularly associated with them in life, or even parts of their bodies, will become relics after their deaths.

  1. I'm pretty sure our conceptions will be very different from each other. Mine's based on Gygax's plans for 2nd edition as published in Dragon and elaborated upon online. (Also, I'm pretty sure there was a mystic class in BECMI, and I know one was published in the Dragonsfoot newsletter…)

Hope you're not planning a bard and a jester, too!

  2. I'm a big RC player so it's pretty odd to think of the mystic as anything but a monk done wrong, none the less I'll be looking forward to this.

  3. I'm pretty fond of your whole project of making good on all those Gygax promises for new 2ed classes (hell did my own mountebank).

Will you have new spell lists or just a number of special abilities?

  4. Just as the savant had some new spells mixed in with some already-existing spells, so too will the mystic have a mix of new and old. Some will be shared with the savant (because there is some overlap in their spheres of influence), but some will be unique to the mystic.

  5. Those of evil ethos are far too ego-driven to pursue the vocation of the mystic. The ultimate goal of the mystic is to lose onesself in contemplation of the multiverse. Such a goal is anathema to those of evil bent, who would rather dominate the multiverse than become one with it.
