Why Greyhawk, and Why Now?
The World of Greyhawk Fantasy Setting was one of the first-ever campaigns for Dungeons & Dragons, having been the home campaign of Gary Gygax. The game and the setting grew together, encompassing both dungeon crawling (in the iconic dungeons beneath Castle Greyhawk) as well as wilderness adventures across the continent known as Oerik and its eastern sub-continent, the Flanaess.
Countless legendary characters and non-player characters had their start in that setting, and eventually made their way into the game itself; Tenser, Bigby, Melf, Lord Robilar, Vecna, Iggwilv, and so many others. The Greyhawk setting is in the very DNA of Dungeons & Dragons, appearing in spells, deities, magic items, and more. The setting is rooted in medieval-style political intrigue, offering a mix of gritty swords-and-sorcery feel with bizarre arcane magic that affords dungeon masters great opportunities for putting their own spin on the world.
Throughout the years, Greyhawk has been officially supported off and on, first by TSR and later by Wizards of the Coast. Throughout that whole span, however, a vibrant fan community has kept the spirit of Greyhawk alive through websites, blogs, YouTube channels, convention games, and of course ordinary play at thousands of tables across the world. Greyhawk never went away; the fans kept it going.
At Gen Con 2026, Wizards of the Coast announced a major new wave of official Greyhawk support. This builds upon the setting’s treatment in the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide and the earlier announcement of Luke Gygax’s Melf’s Guide to Greyhawk project. Gen Con brought the announcement of the new Crown of the Witch Queen adventure and confirmation that Luke Gygax would help guide Greyhawk as part of the new D&D Icons program. With this renewed official support, it has never been a better time to be a fan of Greyhawk.
