Back in 1962, Aurora models introduced a new line of model kits, based on classic Universal monsters. The line started with Frankenstein’s monster, then Dracula, and soon a whole range of classic horror monsters could be had in plastic, perfect for the 8-12 year old boy market. They soon branched out from the classic Universal creatures into a variety of other sets, some of which could be combined into larger scenes.
Fast forward to the early 1970’s and there I am, watching Chiller Theater, devouring Famous Monsters of Filmland, and discovering the still-in-production (although now with glow-in-the-dark pieces!) line of Aurora horror model kits. I got tons of them, from Frankenstein and Godzilla, to the mad scientist and the hapless Victim. I wasn’t much of a painter when I was 8, but I still had a ton of fun with these.
I’ll leave you with a bit of a gallery of some of these models. I wish I still had mine, although I believe they’re still being produced by a new company.
And you didn’t even mention Vampirella, although she’s in the graphics. I had all of these, and built a little chamber of horrors for them.
She’s one I never had. I think she might have come out after I stopped collecting them.
I has most of these! Ah, nostalgia. 🙂
Too bad that kids now can’t ever make model kits like these, especially the one with the victim in it.
