Clerics of the Flanaess, Part 1

It’s been a while since we’ve had one of these articles, but the pages of Dragonne Magazine have once more released their secrets from that alternate universe in which Greyhawk endured and flourished.

For this outing, we have the start of a new series which focuses on specialty clerics in the Flanaess. We see herein modifications to the standard cleric class for Allitur, Atroa, Beltar, Beory, Berei, Bleredd, Boccob, Bralm, Cyndor, and Dalt, including a few new spells unique to two of them. (Note that this article has a cleric of Boccob that’s somewhat different than the one in Greyhawk Adventures.)

We’ll doubtless see more in this series as time goes on. Enjoy!

  1. Thank you Joe! Thanks for picking up the slack on my beloved World of Greyhawk that WotC are happy to otherwise let die. I only run D&D games in Greyhawk and this series will come in handy.

  2. So excited that you’re doing this!

I know that you’ve essentially done the equivalent of this exercise for the 5e ruleset. And I know you’ve mentioned on several occasions that (back in the AOL Greyhawk days) you had made all sorts of 2e specialty priest kits, . . . but that all that work got lost to the mists of time 🙁

So after that OGL debacle from WotC, when you decided to go all-in as far as OSR-compatibility, I wondered to myself if you might ever take all that 5e stuff you did for clerics in Greyhawk and generate OSR versions of it?

In fact, I wondered that all over again when I heard you talk about your 5e cleric stuff on the “Ask the Experts” session (at the end of Virtual Greyhawk Con IV) 😉

All to say, I’m excited that you’re doing this, because I’m still debating whether or not to switch from 5e (which my son and his friends have always wanted me to use) back to OSR (1e)? For me, the cleric variants for different Greyhawk deities are a big deal, which makes the idea of switching all the more compelling 🙂

    1. Yes! That’s exactly what this is; taking my 5E “Faiths of the Flanaess” book and reconverting it to 1E. The direct inspiration came from that very Ask the Experts chat a couple of weeks ago. 🙂
